Beginning the job search as a doctor

Title: Nurse Practitioner

Employer: Vituity, MyMichigan Saginaw

City/State: Saginaw, MI

In practice since: April 2024

In the winter, I love to ski. In the summer, we love to be on the water tubing, jet skiing and having bonfires. I also do CrossFit and enjoy running, reading and playing with my dogs.

What surprised you about your first job search?

There are very few fellowship/post-grad training opportunities for new NPs who plan to work in emergency medicine.

What’s your advice for providers beginning their job search?

Be patient. Know what kind of environment you want to work in and what is important for work/life balance and overall job satisfaction. You worked hard to get here and deserve to practice in a supportive environment.

How did you find your job?

I found my job through PracticeLink, which allowed me to talk one-on-one with a recruiter for the company that staffs the ER I currently work in.

Any anecdotes to share?

I knew I wanted to complete a fellowship and remain in the ER. I wanted to really refine and strengthen my skills and knowledge to grow into a strong clinician, so I was pretty adamant about the position I was searching for. After months of searching and interviewing, I found the fellowship and full-time position I am still in today.

How did PracticeLink help you in your job search?

I was able to filter my job search for exactly what I was looking for.

Any other advice?

Don’t get frustrated with job searching; the right position will come. Be patient, and don’t settle for just any position. •
